It seems as though I took these pictures a long time ago. The idea came out of playing with some kids while I was working on another story. I found it easy to get along with only a few words of Arabic, and a lot of the situations I was photographing were interesting. I won an award for these photos. Three months later, I came back and visited the

kids I'd met before. Everyone was poorer, looking more strained, but pleased to see me anyway. Travel 50 yards and the families you meet are ten times wealthier, but escort their children to school with Uzis. The pictures don't say that, but I wish they did.
