If you're lucky enough not to be running Windows, the procedure is broadly similar. The essential information you'll need is as follows:

POP3 or IMAP incoming server: mail.ripserve.com
your username
your password

SMTP outbound server: smtp.ripserve.com
your username
your password

TIP: if you need to access your email from several computers, you can leave copies of your incoming mail on the POP server. (IMAP does this automatically.) By default, reading your email deletes the message from the server, so you can only access read email from one computer. Both Netscape/Mozilla and Outlook Express allow you to override this.

Ripserve provides experimental support for IMAPS, POP3S and SMPTS. You may use these advanced features at your own discretion.

By default, your disk space quota is 5GB. The largest single email you can send or recieve is 35M.

If you need to change your password, or set up or delete new accounts, contact Ripserve.

Ripserve provides a webmail facility. You can also check and send email online from any computer at http://mail.ripserve.com. Login with your usual username and password and follow the instructions onscreen.

SPAM
Customers who abuse their email accounts to send bulk commercial email may have their privileges revoked. Similarly, Ripserve takes the following measures against incoming spam:

  • A number of systems worldwide which have sent spam in the past are blacklisted. Open relays are also blacklisted
  • Messages with subject "ADV: " are rejected
  • Various viruses are blocked, including ILOVEYOU, Melissa, Happy99 and Papa. There are restrictions on the kinds of attachments that can be sent.
  • Ripserve blocks email from known spammers using the list maintained at spamhaus.org

In all the above cases, the sender is notified of the probelm. No email is rejected without a warning.

Ripserve tags all incoming mail with X-Spam tags, which can be used to filter incoming spam by certain mail programs.

If you do receive spam, either report it, or ignore it. If reporting spam, please include the full mail headers. Replying only confirms to the sender that they have reached a valid email account. Ripserve takes the issues of spam and viruses seriously, but (as per the fine print on our legal terms and conditions) customers are responsible for their own computers.
