In a dry city of 20 million people, there were only 2 bars worth going to. There may have been some places attached to Western style hotels, but we never went. Weekends revolved around house parties - maybe it was on a house boat, maybe someone's father's half built apartment, maybe some one knew someone who worked at the American Embassy who was having a birthday. You would call your friends, find out what was happening, and where. Fancy dress? And then, you would buy some beers, jump in a taxi and show up.

We're friends of Mohamed's! usually worked for us. There are always Mohameds around when you need them in Cairo. And there are always the same faces, each week crashing another party. Somewhere.
